In Paris, the Place du Châtelet is located at the right bank of the Seine River. This is a public square which lies on the borderline between the 1st and 4th arrondissement. The Place du Châtelet is located at the north end of the Pont au Change. The Pont is a bridge that connects the Île de la Cité and the Conciergerie to the right bank. The 1st and 4th districts are adjacent to the Place du Châtelet which makes it a major crossroads. During the middle-ages they looked very differently. During the 19th century a huge wooden defence tower was built next to the river and then it was replaced by a stone fortress in 1130. This stone fortress is known as Grand Châtelet. The Grand Pont was protected by this fortress and in the present it is known as the Notre-Dame Bridge.
