La Conciergerie is situated near the Cathedral of Notre Dame, west of the lle de la Cite. Conciergerie is considered to be the first prison and a former royal palace in the city of Paris. It was used for judicial purposes and was known as the Palais de Justice. In the French Revolution it had a dark history, with almost 3,000 prisoners taken from the Conciergerie and executed.
